Lecture TopicsMonday, March 8th, 2010, 10am: Dr. Patrick BrennanLecture: Women in the Canadian MilitaryEstablished in 1977 by the United Nations, International Women's Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the progress made to advance women's rights and to assess the challenges that remain. It is also an opportunity to consider steps to bring about equality for women in all their diversity. This special day has its origins in the struggles of women fighting for the right to vote and equal pay for work of equal value. Although Canadians celebrate International Women's Week, the highlight is on March 8, International Women's Day. Women have served in the Canadian military for more than 100 years, but it is only recently that we have seen them serving in all military occupations, including combat arms. The Department of National Defense and the Canadian Forces is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of female soldiers, sailors, air personnel and civilian employees, giving them the attention and recognition they deserve. Events are held on March 8 of each year as an occasion for celebration, reflection and re-dedication of this effort. Return to Past Lectures.
