Dr. Patrick Brennan

Dr. Patrick Brennan is Associate Professor of History, Centre for Strategic and Military Studies, University of Calgary.

Dr. Brennan attended public school in North Battleford, Saskatchewan until 1956 and then public and secondary school in Regina, Saskatchewan until 1967.  He received a B.Sc in Physics from the University of Saskatchewan in 1972, his Honours B.A. in Canadian History from the University of Regina in 1979 and his Masters of Arts also from the University of Regina in 1981, with his thesis entitled “Public Works Relief in Saskatchewan Cities 1929-1940.” Dr. Brennan received his doctorate from York University in Toronto in 1989 with his dissertation entitled “A Responsible, Civilized Relationship: Reporting the Nation’s Business 1935-1957.”

Dr. Brennan commenced his teaching with the Department of History as an Assistant Professor in 1989 and was promoted and appointed Associate Professor in 1997.  His research interests focus on the impact of the Great War on Canada, and in particular, the transformation from civilian to soldier within the Canadian Expeditionary Force’s officer corps.

Dr. Brennan has taught courses on Canada and the Two World Wars, the Political History of Canada, 20th Century Canada, the Military History of Canada and a variety of graduate seminar and reading courses.  In addition to his very busy schedule in the History Department, since 2002, he has been a Fellow and the Graduate Program Director at the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies.

Dr. Brennan is the author of many articles, book reviews and conference papers and is currently working on three books: Byng’s and Currie’s Commanders; A Study of Military Command in the Great WarA History of the 44th Battalion, 1916-18 for the New Brunswick Military History Series and Onward: The King’s Own Calgary Regiment in Peace and War.

Dr. Brennan is a member of the Canadian Historical Association, the Organization for the History of Canada and the Society for Military History.  As if the foregoing does not keep him busy enough, his other interests include hiking and backpacking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, astronomy, gardening and cheering on the Saskatchewan Roughriders.  Dr. Brennan is married to Clare Malcolm.
