THE MILITARY MUSEUMS GALA 2012
istorical figures remind us how the War of 1812 helped to shape the foundations of Canada’s identity and political boundaries. Meanwhile, a nursing sister takes a step back in time to the origins of Remembrance Day. Her blue uniform and white veil are marked and worn from working close to the front lines. Costumed interpreters bring Canadian history to life through two new education programs at The Military Museums.

New Education Programs
Shaping Our
Nation: War of 1812
Canadian identity and political boundaries were largely shaped by the War of 1812. In this three part program an historic interpreter will describe the relationships that formed 200 years ago. While in character he will discuss the war, the people, the places, and the developing sentiments between Britain and the United States. Text panels outside the theatre will describe artefacts from the battlefields. Students will compete for limited resources to establish new borders in a hands-on activity that demonstrates the economy of the time. By attending you will support our mission to educate the public, particularly youth, about Canada’s military.
Origins of
Remembrance
Moments before the First World War is over, a nursing sister stops to send students away from the battlefield. Echoing explosions from artillery are about to end on the 11th hour on 11 November 1918. This theatre presentation takes place near the battlefield before the armistice is signed at the end of the war. Hear the story of John McRae and his poem “In Flanders Fields,” learn why the poppy is a symbol of remembrance, and the importance of the 11th hour. This program is suitable for all ages.
Gala 2011 Sponsors
The gala is organized by The Military Museums Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization that delivers education programs at The Military Museums. Funds raised from this gala will reach more than 12,000 students from K to 12 who tour the museums annually in organized groups. Each November our outreach speaker program reaches more than 50,000 students at school assemblies. Your support is integral to the success of these programs and students would benefit greatly from your attendance.
